が駒沢オリンピック公園体育館で行われます。

The All Japan Yoshinkan Aikido demonstration will be held Saturday, October 29th at the Komazawa Olympic stadium in Tokyo. If you would like to participate please apply before Sunday, the 25th of September.

My name is Yap Jon Ban, also known as Johnny. I am from Malaysia and have been living in Japan since 2005. I started Aikido training in Maihama Club since Oct 2010.

I was first informed about Aikido by one of my English language students. She mentioned that she was practising Aikido in a dojo in Funabashi. She also mentioned that Aikido is a non-competitive martial arts sport, and people of all ages can join. So it roused my interest and I did some research about Aikido immediately after that. I saw some videos in Youtube and I thought that it is very interesting and it is a sport that I can do.

The next step was to look for a dojo in Chiba-city and particularly where the sensei can speak English. So I searched the Internet and found the website of Yoshinkan Aikido Ryu. In that website, I found information of Jim-sensei of Maihama Club and made some enquiries directly to him. I went for a trial lesson and then, decided to join as a member a week after that.

Initially, my main concern about Aikido was the fear of getting injured but Jim-sensei assured me that nobody has ever been injured in his class. It has been 6 months now since I joined Maihama Club. All I can say is I enjoyed every class very much. Now I look forward to attending Aikido class every Friday night.

Unfortunately due to repairs needing to be made at the Maihama Sports Center, training will continue to be held at Ryu Dojo. Hopefully by mid to late May we can use the sports center. Keep checking this blog for updates. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Congrats to Philippe Dolivo who recently tested and passed his Nidan test here in Urayasu. Philippe had been here training with us for the last 3 weeks, but flew back home to Switzerland Sunday morning.

Philippe came to Maihama dokokai the night before his test. After an hour of random waza training with Shimura-san, we then ran through a full mock shinsa. Although slightly tired, Philippe did great, and even better on the actual test day. We look forward to seeing him again soon.

２月１３日(日)舞浜同好会の稽古場所と同じこの武道場にて
第７回ジュニア合気道大会とその後第４回千葉県連盟合同
練成会が行われました。
安藤師範と千野師範の両師範に指導頂ける
めったにない機会でした

でもかなり難しかった・・・

普段ではなかなかお会いできない他の同好会の方々とも
一緒に稽古できて
あっという間の２時間でした！

今回参加できなかった皆さんももし次回機会があったら
ぜひ参加してみてくださいね♪

At the end of 2010, 4 Maihama members took their first Aikido tests. Last Friday I was happy to present them all (well 3 out of 4 - Makiko had to work) with their certificates. Congratulations!

Friday, November 12th was a full house at Maihama Dokokai. New members; Johnny, Atsuko-san, Makiko-san(Atsuko-san's daughter) and Takada-san were joined by 11 other guests/members including Ben West(7 week gasshuku visitor) for an hour of both basic techniques and tai ryoku training.

This being Ben's last Maihama training before leaving Ryu Dojo we thought it would be appropriate to have him do the traditional rounds of jiyu waza with all the present blackbelts. Ben survived and following the class we all went out for a Sayonara(Ben)/Welcome(4 new members)party.

Friday July 30th was our last training at Maihama until early September. All of August has been booked with Karate, Kendo and various events. Aug 6th,20th, and 27th training will be held along with the regular Friday night training at Ryu Dojo with Hotta Sensei.

As always our last class before a summer or winter vacation tends to be a good one. This time we attempted to do 100 techniques in 1 hour. All techniques from 6th kyu to 1st kyu and a few extra totalling 101 were done (although a bit sloppy near the end) within 58 minutes.

Wouldn't seem right to put up a blog without the classic pic. So here it is... Guests include - Eddy from London, and Gus from Australia.

Yes folks, another pic, and another Ryu Dojo visitor takes his last class at Maihama Dokokai's Friday night high energy training. This time, Ali Ganchi set a new standard for final Friday night classes... Ali did all the shodan and yudan jiyu-waza consecutively (shite and uke) while the other members took turns wishing Ali a special sayonara via kotegaeshi, udegarami, and so on.

Sorry, this post is a little late, but just found this pic and realized I need to put it up. Yes, another Friday farewell class, with another German guest. This time Daniel Lubecki, from Munich (the only one who timed out the jump, other than Otsuka-san).

Daniel trained everyday 3 or 4 times for almost a month. Daniels last week was the hardest. Thursdays kenshu was just Ando Sensei, the uchideshi and Daniel. After 30 minutes of kihon waza, we had another 30 mins of non-stop jiyu waza. Daniel never gave up, he held in there right to the end. Good job!

P.S. I have no idea how this picture tradition began, maybe Otahara-san.

First off, a big congratulations to Ogata-kun (back row, second from the right) who recently passed his Nidan exam. Ogata has been trying as hard as possible to mix aikido with his busy school schedule for the last few years, and although limited training, he still managed to pull off a great test.

Last Friday, Gert Jungbauer from Germany (front row, second from the right) joined us for 60 mins of sweaty ukemi, jiyu-waza and various shodan waza. Gert has had a full week of training here in Urayasu, and we definetly finished the week off with a good hard class. Following the training, a few well deserved drinks at the local bar.

All Japan Yoshinkan Aikido Demonstration

Saturday, October 31st Yoshinkan Aikido Honbu Dojo hosted the 54th Annual Yoshinkan Aikido demonstration at Komazawa Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. About 700 people participated/attended, 106 of them from various Yoshinkan Aikido Ryu clubs.

Maihama Dokokai along with some members of Irifune Dokokai teamed up and won the group award for "Best club performance". Since Irifune's training is held on Tuesday's and Maihama on Friday's, it was a little tough to get everyone together to practice.

Here is our first and only practice before Saturday's demonstration.

Congratulations to everyone, and I'm already looking forward to next year!

Congratulations to Iori Orimoto who tested and passed her Shodan test in March. Orimoto-san has been practicing aikido for many years, but has only been a Thursday and Friday member of Maihama Dokokai for the past year and a half.

Since joining as a brown belt, Orimoto-san has greatly improved her ukemi and most importantly her overall confidence. Unfortunately, her job has recently been keeping her too busy, but we hope to see more of her this Summer.

Jim Dawes Sensei first began aikido in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, January of 1992. He trained for 6 months at the St.Clair College, Renbukan Dojo (Sensei James Jeannette, 7th Dan).

Unfortunately, his family moved out of the City and temporarily put his training on hiatus. But this short encounter with aikido, kept him wanting more. In 1996, Jim joined the Aiki Centre of Canada (Sensei Jeannette's new dojo) and continued to train diligently, not only at the Aiki Centre, but other nearby dojo's (Seikokan, Sensei Mark Lemmon, 6th Dan), and International guest seminars throughout Ontario and Mid-West America.

In 2004, Jim moved to Tokyo, Japan, and trained almost everyday for 2 years at the Yoshinkan Aikido Headquarters in Ochiai. On Friday's he would travel to Urayasu City, Chiba, to train in Yoshinkan Aikido Ryu's kenshu (intensive) class, with Ando Tsuneo Shihan. Ando Sensei's amazingly sharp, precise and powerful technique, inspired him to learn more.

In May of 2006, Jim joined Yoshinkan Aikido Ryu's 4th Annual Tokubetsu Course. And at the end of 2006, Jim quit his part-time job teaching English to become a full-time uchideshi (apprentice) at Yoshinkan Aikido Ryu.

Jim Dawes Sensei teaches classes throughout Tokyo, Saitama and Chiba, Japan. And has assisted Ando Shihan on seminars in Poland, Ukraine and Russia. Jim Sensei currently holds the rank of sandan (3rd degree blackbelt) and is a certified instructor by the Yoshinkan Aikido Honbu Dojo.

Urayasu City Sports Center

The Urayasu City Sports Center (urayasu-shi sogo taikukan) is located next to Tokyo Disney Land at 2-27 Maihama, Urayasu City, Chiba. It's a 10 minute walk from the JR Maihama station(Keiyo line). It's also easily accessible by car and/or bus.

The Urayasu City Sports Center is a great facility.It has a 65-person-capacity training room loaded with treadmills, cycle and weight machines and plenty of mat space to stretch out on. Then there's an indoor gym big enough for an NBA full-court press, a table-tennis room, two large martial-arts halls, one carpeted in tatami and a partially indoor archery range. Add to that two children's rooms, conference space and more. And that is just the North Wing.

The Southwest Wing houses four pools for your aquatic pleasure. They range from a 25-m-long eight-lane pool to its rehabilitative counterpart in which to walk a circular course. Top it all off with a spacious outdoor park, kids play area and eight pro-size tennis courts.
